To promote DIY and punk culture, both through influential releases and through unconventional trust-based business practices. The purpose of Dischord records was never to be a profit-making venture—it was formed to to influence culture by getting music, recorded by friends, into the hands of fans.
Key Members: Ian MacKaye, Jeff Nelson, Nathan Strejcek, Geordie Grindle, Amy Pickering
Founded in 1980 in Washington DC, Dischord Records was founded by Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and became a legendary punk label through employing volunteer-led DIY methods of releasing music from a shared house. Releases from Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Void, and more created a cultural impact by spreading a bold DIY ethos and punk culture across the world. As an organization, Dischord has never sold merch, used contracts with artists, or used lawyers. The label is still around to this day. In 2016, Dischord Founder Ian MacKaye remarked “From the beginning of this label, people have said that the way we do things is unsustainable, unrealistic, idealistic, and we were just dreaming. Well, the dream is now 35 years old, so they can go fuck themselves.”
