New Release: Male Fantasies by Maggie Dunlap
Maggie Dunlap is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans sculpture, photography, and performance, and blends themes of girlhood, gore, and Southern Gothic.
Maggie read Klaus Theweleit’s 1977 book, Male Fantasies for the first time in 2019 while she was doing research for her senior thesis at the School of Visual Arts. She ended up screen printing a handful of bootleg MALE FANTASIES t-shirts in the lab at SVA, first for herself, then for her friends.

The t-shirts became an accidental memetic sensation. Maggie credits the virality shirt with the kind of girl who first purchased it – “Dasha Nekrosova was my first official customer, and I owe the virality of the shirt to her.”

The MALE FANTASIES t-shirts were only ever available in ultra-limited quantities, first to Maggie’s friends, and then in a very limited run on Printed Matter. Now Maggie has produced a run of 52 MALE FANTASIES hoodies, available for the first time, exclusively on Metalabel.

The hoodies were designed by Maggie in Brooklyn, manufactured in Los Angeles, and embroidered in Manhattan’s Chinatown. They were modeled by Taylor Jeanne Pennie and shot by Maggie.

Although this project originally began as a fun respite from Maggie’s critical thesis, its viral success taught her something essential about her art practice.
